Home Remedies For Cleaning Tile And Grout

Home Remedies for Cleaning Tile and Grout:

  • Baking Soda Scrub:

Commonly available in homes, baking soda has a lot of hidden potential. All you need to do is to mix ¼ cup of white vinegar, one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and ¼ cup of baking soda with a gallon of water. Your tile and grout cleaner is ready! You can also add a few drops of essential oils like Eucalyptus or Citronella to make your surfaces insect repelling as well. These essential oil drops will also reek of a wonderful fragrance.

Now apply this mixture on your tile and grout generously. Leave for some time. After a few minutes, take a scrubbing brush and begin scrubbing from one end to the other of a room. Mop with warm water. Repeat mopping to remove all the residue. You can skip on scrubbing if you just find light stains on the surface. 

Note: Do not use this mixture on natural stone surfaces like marble or limestone as the vinegar may leave etching marks.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture:

If you find your tile and grout discolored and stained, you can get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and make your own cleaner by mixing baking soda. You need to make a paste with one part hydrogen peroxide and three parts baking soda. This mixture acts like a bleaching agent and tends to remove all dense stains and yellow deposits. Also add a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. Now apply this mixture on your tile and grout and begin scrubbing with a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush. Mop with warm water once done. You will have to mop twice to remove all residue.

  • Tile and Grout Cleaner Using Mint Oil:

If you find a lot of ants and mice at home, preparing this minty mixture wil be helpful. Just mix equal parts water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a bucket. Add a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and a generous dosage of peppermint essential oil. The fragrance from this oil will repel ants and mice. You can add this mixture in a spray bottle and spray it on the tile or grout or just mop it directly on the surface. You may mop the surface again with clean water to remove extra residue.

  • Salt Scrub:

Salt Scrub

This will prove to be the cheapest home remedy. Salt has shown effective results in killing microorganisms and mold. It dehydrates these germs through the process of osmosis. All you need to do is to sprinkle a generous amount of salt on wet tile and grout. Then scrub the surface with a scrubbing brush. You can even let the salt sit overnight to ensure that all the germs are killed. The next day, you can mop with clean water.

  • Borax:

You can also clean your tile and grout with Borax. It is a multipurpose cleaner that efficiently cleans counters, and removes stains. All you need to do is to mix ¼ cup borax with half cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of liquid soap in a gallon of water. Wipe the floors with this mixture. You may also scrub the tile and grout after pouring this mixture on them. Then mop again with clean water.
